Paleo On the Go: Original Pancake House, Boulder CO

I like to take my boys out for a breakfast treat on the Saturday mornings that I have them. This morning, at their request, we went to the Original Pancake House in Boulder, CO. As I looked at the menu I realized I would have to get creative to find something friendly with my Paleo palette.

I asked for the two egg platter with sausage links (I know the sausage isn't strictly Paleo, but I don't do open meals, and rarely eat processed meats).  The only problem was that they came with a stack of buttermilk pancakes - delicious, but not what I wanted.  I asked if I could substitute the cakes with a bowl of fruit.  They sacked me for an extra $2.50 to do so, but went along with my request.  The fruit turned out to be mixed with some canned peaches, which I just ate around since they spent most of their existence suspended in corn syrup.  The end result was $9 for eggs and sausage and small bowl of fruit.

Not my best Paleo dining experience, but I walked away knowing I could have put way worse into my body.

Baked Walnut-Cinnamon Apples

Nom noms. Mmmmm

  • 4 Apples
  • 1 cup raisins
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup water
  • ¼ cup walnuts

Heat oven to 375 F. Core and piece apples with a fork in several places around the center, to prevent them from bursting. Mix raisins, nuts, cinnamon and vanilla in a small bowl. Fill center of each apple with this mixture. Place in a glass-baking dish and pour water into pan. Cover with foil and bake about 30 minutes or until tender.

I made these tonight and they were delicious. Tastes like Apple Pie minus the guilt!

30 Days of Paleo

Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C.

I've officially hit day 30 on the Paleo diet.  My weight has continued to remain stable.  I'm hovering at 160 to 162 lb (all fluid fluctuation, I'm sure).  I started at 169 lb.  I'm not having any of the side effects that I've heard of some people having (head aches, low energy, food cravings) in the first 30 days, and I feel charged during my workouts.  I'm also still gaining muscle while leaning out, which was my goal all along.  My plan is to go another four weeks super strict, and then to introduce the weekly "open meal" that Cordain encourages in his book on Paleo.  In the mean time I've found all kinds of Paleo friendly foods, and I always feel really good about what I'm eating.

In search of food, I've found a number of blogs that feature some great Paleo recipes.  Here is a list that I will update periodically for your enjoyment (or just get my paleo recipe feed from delicio.us):

2 Weeks of Paleo (so far)

2 Weeks of Paleo

I have just passed two weeks on a fairly strict paleo routine.  The first week the weight loss was alarming to be honest.  I dropped 7 lbs in 7 days, which seems hard to believe and perhaps even unhealthy.  In the second week the weight loss stopped - I actually put 2 lbs back on - and I'm feeling really good.  That's 14 days without any added sugars or artificial anything in any of my food.  Also, no dairy, grain, beans, or taters.

The first few days were tough.  Most of the "healthy" snacks that I would normally turn to like granola bars or cheese sticks were now off menu.  I got used to eating nuts and small amounts of berries or dried fruit for snacks.  I'm even finding my cravings for food are changing.  I can't seem to go past mushrooms in the produce aisle without stocking up (which is weird if you know me - I've made plenty of jokes about mushrooms and athletes food being genetically similar).

It's hard to say how paleo is affecting my performance so far.  I'm progressively climbing more difficult routes, lifting more in the weight room, and doing it all with less weight on my body, so I'd say it's part of a successful overall training routine.  I definitely feel like I have a consistently high level of energy.  The big goal here is to lean out and get the biggest strength/weight advantage I can in time for the climbing competitions this fall.  I can definitely tell my body has gotten leaner.  I'll post again in a couple of weeks to report any new developments.

Starting Paleo Today

I decided I would officially start the Paleo diet today.  My plan is to give it 8 weeks and see how it works for me.  The idea is to cut carbs from grain, potatoes, and beans and replace them with carbs from healthy, fresh vegetables.  It also cuts any added sugar and processed foods or preservatives.  In a nutshell, I eat all the meat, nuts, fruits and veggies that I want.  In other words, eat like a cave man.
